Samsung has scheduled to unveil its flagship smartphone of this year from the S series, the Galaxy S9, on Monday 26th February 2018 at the Mobile World Congress (or MWC in short) 2018, happening in Barcelona, Spain.
Let us say “hi !” to the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9 Plus
The Samsung Galaxy S9 and its elder brother Samsung Galaxy S9+ is rumored to have a similar design to the last year’s S8 range. This means a metal ring with a glass back and an almost bezel-free ‘Infinity Display’.
According to the specs from GSMArena, the Galaxy S9 is predicted to have a 5.8-inch QHD+ display and a single rear camera. Whereas, the bigger S9 Plus will have a 6.2-inch QHD+ display and apparently pack dual 12-megapixel rear cameras.
What’s different this year?
The oddly placed fingerprint sensor, beside the primary camera on the back of the Galaxy S8 has been re-positioned in the Galaxy S9.
Upgrade in RAM
The RAM has been upgraded in S9+, this variant of the series comes with two options :
- 64 Gigabytes internal memory along with a 4 Gigabytes RAM
- 128 Gigabytes internal memory along with 6 Gigabytes of RAM — pretty cool!
But the Galaxy S9 has only 4 Gigabytes RAM with 64 Gigabytes internal memory.
The elder sibling, S9+ has a dual camera with the following features:
- 12 MP (f/1.5, 26mm, 1/2.5″, 1.4 µm, Dual Pixel PDAF)
- phase detection autofocus
- OIS and of course an LED flash
The S9 series will pack a “3D emoji” ready to go head-to-head with Apple’s Animoji on the iPhone X. 3D faces will map your expressions to little emoji.
New Camera Tricks
The camera may tap into a f/1.5 aperture for low-light shooting or macro photography, but also use a f/2.4 aperture to ensure more objects are in focus. F/1.5 is also an extraordinarily low f-stop for a smartphone and means more light hitting the imaging sensor, more detail, and less noise.
We have heard that the Galaxy S9 and S9+ will be launching with some new cool and vibrant exterior colors, along with the Titanium Silver, Maple Gold, Orchid Grey and Midnight Black, such as the Ocean Blue and a mix of Pink and Magenta.
While it looks like we’re going to get a 3,000mAh power pack – the same as on the Galaxy S8 – the improved CPU inside will likely lead to a real boost in battery life.
The S9+ is predicted to have a 3,500mAh battery –fair enough!
Samsung Galaxy S9 other features
- An improved iris scanner
- Stereo speakers
Samsung will likely improve the iris scanner for the Galaxy S9, with rumors suggesting it will be boosted to 3MP (from 2MP on the S8) and better able to recognize your eyes, even if you wear glasses or the lighting is poor. It will also apparently be faster than on the S8.
We’ve also heard that it could leverage Intelligent Scan Biometrics to combine both iris scanning and facial recognition, along with the ability to work better in poor lighting.
