The protests erupted across Pakistan when the police carried out an operation on the protesters sitting in Islamabad. When the situation became worse it compelled the government to call the army to restore law and order across the country.
The capital of, only Muslim nuclear power, was paralyzed by some thousands of demonstrators, resulting in the operation by the law enforcement agencies. After the operation, the demands of protester were changed from the resignation of Law minister to the entire government to step down.
Right now the protests are being held in
Lahore, Gujranwala, Rawalpindi, Islamabad (Capital), Peshawar and Karachi, the economic hub of Pakistan.
All electronic media channels have been turned off by PEMRA to stop the media from fuelling anger among the public.
According to the latest news, all educational institutions have been closed for next two days due to prevailing law and order situation in cities.
This all initiated when the Government of Pakistan amended the constitution to make lifetime disqualified former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to be president of his party Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). In that amendment, the Islamic clause of the finality of Prophethood was removed which made Ahmedis legally Muslim.
This hurt the emotions of many Muslims around the country. The religious party ‘Tehreek e Labaiq’ started off the protest and marched from Lahore to Islamabad earlier this month. They entered the capital territory and announced sit-in at Faizabad, Islamabad.
The strong reaction from the public forced the government to reverse the amendment of the finality of prophethood. But the protesters were demanding the resignation of Law Minister Zahid Hamid and names of persons behind this controversy.
Apex Court of Pakistan intervened when all the dialogues between government and protesters failed. They ordered the government to shift the demonstrators to an alternate place so that daily life of people couldn’t be disturbed. In light of that order, the government initiated operation which later on became violent and resulted in nationwide protests.
